Tammy Baldwin honored by colleagues for Senate work

Washington — U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin was recognized Tuesday by her colleagues for nabbing this year's first Golden Gavel Award for spending 100 hours presiding over the Senate chamber.

"The people of Wisconsin work hard every day to help move our country forward so I take very seriously my responsibility to do the same serving our state in the Senate," Baldwin said.

In making the announcement last week, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) heaped praise on his fellow Democrat.

"We have not had a harder working senator the past nine months," Reid said. "In the short time you've been here, you've had admirable dedication to this institution."

Baldwin was scheduled to receive the award Tuesday during the Democrats' caucus, but, because of the

shutdown, the senator will have to wait a while for the actual gavel.
