Baldwin and Colleagues Introduce Resolution Opposing National Sales Tax

Baldwin calls for middle-class tax cut and opposes cuts to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans’ benefits

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and 14 colleagues introduced a Senate resolution opposing Congressional Republicans’ plan to impose a nationwide sales tax on all goods and services, which would increase prices for hardworking families by 30 percent. Instead of this tax increase, the resolution calls for supporting a tax cut that will help working families and grow the middle class.

“Hard working Wisconsin families need a tax break, not a misguided 30 percent sales tax that jacks up the price of everything from groceries to gas,” said Senator Baldwin. “I’m fighting to lower costs for families with middle-class tax cuts and protect Wisconsinites’ hard-earned benefits, like Social Security and Medicare, not add to the pain of high costs and inflation.”

The resolution is led by Senators Jacky Rosen (D-NV) and Jon Tester (D-MT) and is also co-sponsored by Senators Bob Menendez (D-NJ), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), John Fetterman (D-PA), Patty Murray (D-WA), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Jack Reed (D-RI), Tim Kaine (D-VA), John Hickenlooper (D-CO), Michael Bennet (D-CO), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), and Jeff Merkley (D-OR).

Text of the full resolution is available here.

The Senators’ resolution opposes the House Republican proposal to impose a 30 percent sales tax on all goods and services, raising prices for hardworking families and seniors. The resolution also supports the passage of a responsible tax cut to benefit hardworking families and grow the middle class, while ensuring that the ultra-wealthy and billion-dollar corporations pay their fair share. The resolution also explicitly opposes paying for any tax cuts with cuts to Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid, or benefits for servicemembers, veterans, or law enforcement.
