Baldwin Brings Home $25 Million to Improve Road Safety on Highways 47 and 55 in Northeastern Wisconsin

Funding through Baldwin-backed Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will resurface nearly 40 miles of road, replace culverts, repair guardrails, and widen shoulders

WISCONSIN – Today, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) announced she successfully delivered $25 million in federal funding to make critical safety improvements to Highway 47 and Highway 55 in Menominee County. The funding for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) will be used to resurface nearly 40 miles of road and make safety improvements, including guardrail upgrades, centerline rumble strips, and shoulder widening. Baldwin both pushed the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to back this project and voted for the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that provides funding for the project.

“Every community across Wisconsin deserves access to safe, reliable roads to get to work, school, or wherever they are going,” said Senator Baldwin. “I am proud to bring home this funding that will make Wisconsin’s roads safer for families and businesses, replacing the aging infrastructure that our communities and Made in Wisconsin economy rely on.”

“Here in Wisconsin, we’ve gotten to work fixing the darn roads and ensuring our state’s infrastructure is ready for a 21st-century workforce and economy, but we know our work continues,” said Gov. Evers. “Thanks to Sen. Baldwin’s leadership in securing millions of dollars through the federal RAISE program, we are continuing our work to bring better, safer roads, highways, bike lanes, and railways to communities across our state, all while moving forward toward building a more sustainable future for all.”

Highway 47 and Highway 55 serve as connections between the Menominee Reservation and North Central Wisconsin, playing a vital role in economic development and facilitating tourism to the region. However, the road infrastructure is aging and requires frequent repairs.

WisDOT will utilize funds to resurface approximately 39.65 miles of road and replace approximately 102 culverts. Road improvements include safety features such as guardrail upgrades, centerline rumble strips, shoulder widening, and 6-inch pavement marking, as well as the relocation of a pull-off area on WIS 55 one mile south of Markton. The project will also add multimodal improvements in the Neopit area, including lighting, ADA-compliant curb ramps, and sidewalk replacements.

The funding comes through the DOT’s Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) program, which helps states, local communities, and Tribal governments complete multimodal infrastructure projects.
