U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin Supports Bipartisan Solutions on Children’s Health Care, Community Health Centers, Fighting Opioid Epidemic, Improving Veterans Health Care and Investments in Rebuilding Infrastructure, including Expanding Rural Broadband

Bipartisan Senate agreement provides significant funding increase for domestic priorities over the next two years.

Senator Baldwin: “It’s time to deliver results for the American people.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin today issued the following statement on the Senate budget agreement, which includes funding for key priorities Senator Baldwin pushed for including community health centers, veterans’ health care, rural broadband and to help local communities combat the opioid epidemic.

“This bipartisan budget agreement delivers on a number of issues important to Wisconsin. I have been working to get the job done on funding for children’s health care, community health centers and a strong federal investment to provide our local communities with the support they need to combat the opioid epidemic and save lives,” said Senator Baldwin. “I also fought to provide Wisconsin dairy farmers with much-needed, immediate relief before the next farm bill and this agreement delivers, just as it does with a solid federal investment to rebuild our infrastructure that will help rural communities in our state expand internet access. Instead of shortchanging our troops and veterans, this bipartisan proposal funds improvements at the VA and provides our military with budget certainty. I am committed to getting the job done and moving these bipartisan solutions forward in the Senate and it’s important that the Republican House and President Trump step up and do the same. It’s time to deliver results for the American people.”

The bipartisan Senate agreement includes, in part, the following items:

  • More than $7 billion to Community Health Centers (CHCs), Teaching Health Centers (THCs) and the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) to help provide access to high quality health care for rural and low-income Americans.
  • Ten years of Children’s Health Insurance Plan (CHIP) funding.
  • $6 billion for the fight against the opioid and mental health crises. 
  • A significant investment for dairy, investing over $1 billion into the dairy safety net for family dairy farmers.
  • $20 billion to bolster our country’s infrastructure (including surface transportation, rural water and wastewater, clean and safe drinking water, rural broadband and energy infrastructure).
  • $4 billion to rebuild and improve Veterans Hospitals and Clinics.
  • Ensures budget parity for domestic priorities, while eliminating sequester caps and increasing investment in defense funding and the country’s national security.
  • $5.8 billion for the bipartisan Child Care Development Block Grant program.
  • $4 billion for student-centered programs that aid college affordability, including programs that help police officers, teachers and firefighters.
  • $2 billion for important research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), ranging from combating Alzheimer’s to antibiotic resistant bacteria.
  • Ensures the Medicare Part D “Donut Hole” will be fully closed by 2019 to give seniors faster relief to help afford life-saving prescription drugs.
