On Child Tax Credit Awareness Day, Senator Baldwin Promotes Major Tax Relief for Working Families

The American Rescue Plan expanded the Child Tax Credit, putting more money in the pockets of 39 million households in America

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today is Child Tax Credit Awareness Day and U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin is promoting the expanded Child Tax Credit that was included in the American Rescue Plan Act, signed into law by President Biden in March. The Baldwin-backed legislation expanded tax relief for 39 million households in America and is projected to lift more than five million children out of poverty this year, cutting child poverty by more than half. Beginning next month, families will begin receiving monthly Child Tax Credit payments.

“I voted for the American Rescue Plan and it delivers working families the largest expansion of the Child Tax Credit ever. The monthly payments starting next month will provide major tax relief for Wisconsin working families and put more money in their pockets,” said Senator Baldwin.

For those with children, the American Rescue Plan provides $3,000 per child 6-17 and $3,600 for children under the age of six. All working families will get the full credit if they make up to $150,000 for a couple or $112,500 for a family with a single parent (also called Head of Household). Starting on July 15th and through the rest of the calendar year, payments will be monthly via direct deposit for 80% of families and through the mail for the others – at $250 per month for each child between ages 6-17, or $300 per month for each child under the age of 6.

If an individual has filed tax returns for 2019 or 2020, or if they have signed up to receive a stimulus check from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), they will get this tax relief automatically and do not need to sign up or take any further action. The IRS has launched a simplified online tool which will allow families not automatically enrolled in the program to receive the Child Tax Credit.
