WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) is calling for answers from Louis DeJoy, the new Postmaster General and Chief Executive Officer of the United States Postal Service, about recent operational changes and directives from him that have resulted in mail being left behind at distribution centers in Wisconsin, and mail delivery being delayed to Wisconsinites.
In her letter to the Postmaster General, Senator Baldwin writes, “My office has received the attached photos of mail being left behind at the Oak Creek, Wisconsin distribution center, including Amazon packages and Priority Mail. In addition, constituents have reached out to me noting they are already experiencing delays in receiving mail. The Postal Service is vital for small businesses, seniors and rural communities and the COVID-19 pandemic has made the mission of the Postal Service more important than ever, as letter carriers deliver life-saving medications to individuals isolated at home during this public health crisis and millions of Americans are voting with mail-in ballots in order to stay safe.”
DeJoy, who is a major campaign donor to President Trump, established major operational changes that have slowed down mail delivery. According to the Washington Post, “Postmaster General Louis DeJoy told employees to leave mail behind at distribution centers if it delayed letter carriers from their routes, according to internal USPS documents obtained by The Washington Post and verified by the American Postal Workers Union and three people with knowledge of their contents, but who spoke on the condition of anonymity to avoid retribution.”
“I have heard from Wisconsin postal service workers and constituents who are concerned about the new policies and I share their concerns because it is wrong for President Trump’s new Postmaster General to direct letter carriers to leave mail behind and delay delivery,” said Senator Baldwin. “The United States Postal Service is, by law, a basic and fundamental service provided to the people by our government, authorized by the Constitution, created by Act of Congress, and supported by the people. The Trump Administration should start treating it as such.”
