WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin released the following statement on President Trump’s nomination of Mark Green to be Secretary of the Army:
“The U.S. Army Soldier’s Code requires Soldiers to pledge to ‘treat others with dignity and respect while expecting others to do the same.’ Disturbingly, Tennessee State Senator Mark Green, President Trump’s nominee to serve as the next Secretary of the Army, has failed to uphold this solemn pledge. His deeply offensive statements and actions have repeatedly demeaned and disrespected the value and contributions of LGBT Americans, Latinos, Muslims and women.
“The diverse Soldiers and families who make up our All-Volunteer Army are a reflection of our diverse nation. It is that very diversity of background, united toward a common goal, that makes America the greatest country on earth and our military the finest fighting force the world has ever known. These brave men and women deserve a leader who respects the inherent value and contributions of each and every Soldier.
“President Trump should withdraw Green’s nomination immediately. If the President won’t do the right thing, then the Senate Armed Services Committee should reject this nominee, who, if confirmed, would negatively impact Army morale, cohesion and effectiveness, as well as limit the Service’s ability to recruit and retain the best and brightest among us.
“I stand with the growing chorus of Americans, including retired military officers, who oppose this nomination. Mark Green is the wrong choice to lead our Army in its work advancing American values at home and abroad every day.”
