U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin Cosponsors Legislation to Fully Restore Broadband Privacy Protections

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin, a member of the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, helped introduce legislation to restore broadband privacy rules.

“We must expand consumer protection to include broadband privacy rules,” said Senator Baldwin. “This reform well ensure that internet users are receiving the strong protections they deserve.”

The legislation reinstates the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules which would have required internet service providers to obtain consent before sharing their subscribers’ sensitive information and adopt reasonable data security protections. Last month, Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate passed Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolutions, which President Donald Trump signed into law this week, formally rescinding the FCC’s broadband privacy rules. 

The legislation was authored by Senator Edward J. Markey (D-MA) and also cosponsored by Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Bernard Sanders (I-VT), Jeffrey A. Merkley (D-OR), Martin Heinrich (D-NM), Tom Udall (D-NM), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Al Franken (D-MN).
