Baldwin and Evers visited 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline call center, hosted mental health roundtable

Green Bay, WI – Today, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin launched her Delivering for Wisconsin Tour in Green Bay to highlight her work bringing home resources to help Wisconsin address the mental health crisis and provide support to those in need. Senator Baldwin toured the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline call center to highlight her work to create the three-digit hotline and hosted a roundtable discussion with local leaders and mental health providers to discuss the Senator securing $100,000 for Brown County to increase access to mental health resources. Senator Baldwin’s Delivering for Wisconsin Tour is highlighting her work to lower costs for working families, support the Made in Wisconsin economy, and bring home resources to keep Wisconsin communities safe and healthy.

“The mental health crisis touches every community across our state and we need to do everything we can to help our friends and neighbors in need,” said Senator Baldwin. “I worked hard to create the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline and bring home resources to support our local providers, and it was heartening to see those resources get put to work to save Wisconsinites’ lives. Addressing the mental health crisis is going to take all of us, and I am committed to continuing to fight to get Wisconsinites in crisis the help that they deserve and need.”

Senator Baldwin was joined by Governor Evers, who declared 2023 the “Year of Mental Health.” The two toured the Wisconsin 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline call center and spoke with operators about the increase in the volume of outreach since the transition to a three-digit phone number. Senator Baldwin discussed her work to create the hotline through bipartisan legislation and to support 988 in Wisconsin through her role on the Appropriations Committee. Senator Baldwin successfully secured $3 million in this year’s budget to support implementation in Wisconsin and passed new legislation to strengthen the hotline.

Senator Baldwin and Governor Evers then attended a roundtable with local mental health providers, professionals, and advocates to highlight the Senator’s work delivering $100,000 to Brown County to support mental health outreach. The funding will allow the county to increase staffing capacity and serve more Fox Valley residents.

Senator Baldwin will continue her Delivering for Wisconsin Tour on Tuesday, heading to Wausau to discuss her work supporting local fire departments and public safety agencies.
