WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, after voting to repeal the Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) in Iraq under President George W. Bush in 2002, as well as under President George H.W. Bush in 1991, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) released the following statement:
“I have long-held concerns about the United States engaging in endless wars that put our young people at risk and put taxpayer dollars on the line in perpetuity. We owe it to our servicemembers, veterans, their families, and the American people to once and for all declare an end to the Iraq War,” said Senator Baldwin. “It is our responsibility in Congress to carefully weigh the decision to end wars that no longer serve an essential purpose to keep our country and the world safe. I am proud to stand with the vast majority of Americans who support ending this chapter of our nation’s history, one where our veterans and their families in Wisconsin and across the country sacrificed so much.”
Senator Baldwin also supports repealing the 2001 AUMF for the War on Terror, which authorized the widespread use of force by the executive branch in the wake of 9/11. Last week, she joined a bipartisan group of Senators in support of an amendment to repeal the 2001 authorization to ensure it is not misused, but it did not pass the Senate.
