Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin today applauded the U.S. Department of Justice’s announcement of a $500,000 COPS Hiring Program grant for the City of Madison Police Department to hire additional staff for the Madison Community Outreach & Resource Education (CORE) team.
“I applaud the Department of Justice for awarding this substantial grant funding for the Madison Police Department,” said Senator Baldwin. “This funding will help build the CORE team and establish relationships to foster mutual trust and positive, productive police interactions that will help prevent violence.”
Senator Baldwin supported the City of Madison Police Department’s application for COPS funding, sending a letter to Attorney General Loretta Lynch in July. The CORE team is scheduled to become operational in 2016.
The Department of Justice’s COPS Hiring Program (CHP) is designed to advance public safety through community policing by addressing the full-time sworn officer needs of law enforcement agencies nationwide. CHP provides funds directly to law enforcement agencies to hire new or rehire career law enforcement officers and to increase their community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts.
