U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin Questions Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Failure to Protect Americans’ Personal Information

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin, a member of the Senate Commerce Committee, questioned Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on how the company allowed Cambridge Analytica to harvest the private data of more than 87 million Facebook users and is urging Commerce Committee leadership to immediately call Cambridge Analytica to testify before Congress. Last month, Senator Baldwin called for this hearing after media reports revealed that Cambridge Analytica obtained the private data of tens of millions of Facebook users.

“The American people need to know that companies are going to safeguard their personal information and whether its Facebook or Equifax or Uber, we need to hold companies accountable when they fail to protect people’s privacy on their platforms. And when there is a data breach, companies need to be more transparent with the American people and let consumers know they are at risk,” said Senator Baldwin. “In this case, we know that Cambridge Analytica is responsible for harvesting private, personal information from Facebook. Millions of people don’t know what Cambridge Analytica did with their personal information and who it was shared with. We need answers on their unauthorized use of millions of Facebook users’ personal information and I would hope my colleagues on the Commerce Committee will move quickly to continue this important work.”
