U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin Statement on Supreme Court's Decision on Voting Rights Act

Washington, D.C.—US Senator Tammy Baldwin released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision on the 1965 Voting Rights Act:

“For nearly 50 years, the Voting Rights Act has helped secure the right to vote for millions of citizens.   I am deeply troubled by today’s Supreme Court decision to gut a fundamental provision of the law that protects Americans against voting discrimination and helps ensure a fair and equal voting process.  This decision turns back the clock on the most fundamental of our American rights and is a real threat to voter participation among Americans who have experienced discrimination when voting. It is now time for Congress to act and make this right by working together to end voting discrimination and guarantee that every American has equal access to the polls.”
