U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin Tours Active Logging Site in Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest to Highlight Good Neighbor Authority

Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, WI – U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin today toured an active logging site to highlight the importance of Good Neighbor Authority for Wisconsin’s timber economy.

Senator Baldwin was joined by members of the forest products industry and officials from the U.S. Forest Service, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and County Forests at the active logging site on National Forest land that is operating under Good Neighbor Authority.

“Today I saw firsthand how the Good Neighbor Authority benefits our northern Wisconsin timber economy and improves forest management in the Badger State,” said Senator Baldwin. “Our Wisconsin timber economy is facing a number of challenges that need to be addressed. That is why I was proud to champion the use of Good Neighbor Authority here in Wisconsin.

As a strong supporter of Wisconsin’s timber economy, Senator Baldwin championed the use of Good Neighbor Authority in Wisconsin, which was established by an agreement signed by the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest and the Wisconsin DNR in 2015. Good Neighbor Authority, passed in the 2014 Farm Bill supported by Senator Baldwin, allows the U.S. Forest Service to enter into agreements or contracts with states to have them perform forest, rangeland and watershed restoration services on National Forest System lands.

Senator Baldwin has also fought to end “fire borrowing,” where U.S. Forest Service funds and staff resources have been regularly diverted from Wisconsin forests to fight wildfires in the west.
