U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin’s Budget Amendment To Strengthen Manufacturing Economy Passes Committee

Washington D.C. – U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin, a member of the Senate Budget Committee, yesterday offered an amendment to the Concurrent Resolution on the Budget for Fiscal Year 2014 at the Senate Budget Committee mark-up. Baldwin’s amendment proposes a deficit neutral reserve fund to create regional manufacturing hubs that develop and deploy new manufacturing technologies, strengthening the manufacturing industry and creating good-paying American jobs. The Concurrent Resolution on the Budget for Fiscal Year 2014 passed through the Budget Committee last night.

“In Wisconsin, we know that a strong manufacturing economy creates economic security for hard-working middle class families,” said Senator Baldwin. “Manufacturing plays a vital role as the engine of a dynamic economy built to last. My amendment seeks to support this powerful engine of innovation by creating regional manufacturing hubs of collaborative research and development across our country.”

The public-private partnerships would pair the manufacturing sector with state and local governments, universities, and technical colleges. These hubs then work to develop region-specific world-class manufacturing technologies and products, built by American workers. Baldwin has made it a top priority to renew our commitment to creating a “Made in Wisconsin” economy through investments in innovation, technology, education, and job readiness for advanced manufacturing.

“I believe these hubs will fuel American innovation and competitiveness, move our economy forward, and build a “Made in America” economy that will strengthen and grow our middle class from the bottom up and the middle out.”

Baldwin’s amendment passed with bipartisan support and will be included in the bill expected on the Senate floor next week.
